  1. Why was our Assistant Fire Marshall let go recently? Lack of funds can not be a reason, since we just passed the public safety millage. Also, why was this action a surprise to the Board of Trustees, who heard about it at their last meeting after the action was taken?

  2. After the overwhelming success of Proposal F, I have wanted to write an update on this subject. However,I have been thwarted by a lack of progress by the STFD to put together a substantive program – or at least one that could be shared with the public.

Then, on March 5th, I learned that the first major change in the Fire Department had been made - our Assistant Fire Marshall (Jack Germain) was let go. The purported reason was "lack of funds." Really? I suspect that the real reason was personality conflict between Jack and Township management. It is interesting to note that the Board of Trustees had no fore-knowledge of this decision.

As a member of the Public Safety Committee and as a Township resident, I feel betrayed. Several of us worked hard to get $1.0m of funding for the Fire Department and the first thing they do is fire a trained, career, knowledgeable staff member who, while not fighting fires, was adding to the safety of the Township with his Fire Marshal duties. To add insult to injury, the excuse for this termination was “lack of funds!” After receiving an estimated $1,009,000 from Proposal F, there’s not enough money to pay for an Assistant (part-time) Fire Marshal? Really?

Perhaps I am late to the table on this but I now firmly believe that this Township's problems cannot be corrected via the ballot box. The sooner our elected officials realize this and deal with the situation the better off the Township will be.
